Skilled Migration Scheme: Highly Skilled Migrant Programmeby: J Blinker One of the most popular schemes is the points-based skilled immigration category, the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) which was introduced in January 2002 to attract ' high human capital individuals, who have the qualifications and skills required by UK businesses to compete in the global marketplace' (Para 2.18, 2002 White Paper). In this scheme points are allocated for educational qualifications, work experience, past earnings, achievements in chosen field, spouse qualifications. Unlike the sponsored work permit you do not require an employer in order to obtain the visa Why HSMP?Under the HSMP you may be employed or self-employed, and you do not need permission to change your employment. After five continuous years in the UK as a highly skilled migrant, you will be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK ( also known as permanent residence) and dependants (partner and children under 18) may be included in your application/s too.
